At Calaway·Young Cancer Center in Glenwood Springs, CO, we understand that undergoing medical treatment can be an emotional experience. Integrated therapies utilize various tools and techniques to help reduce stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and poor sleep. It also aids in creating a calmer state-of-mind, physical healing, and the overall well-being of the patient. All of our integrated therapy services at the CYCC of Valley View are selected to meet the individualized needs of our patients and are provided at no additional cost.

Types of therapy

Calaway·Young Cancer Center is pleased to offer the following integrated therapies:

  • Massage Therapy is the manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. It can also help reduce tension, improve sleep, and offer relief for stress-related muscle strain.
  • Indications: Muscle pain and soreness, joint pain and stiffness, muscle spasms, tension headaches, neuropathy, fatigue, stress and anxiety, surgery recovery, edema, limited range of motion
  • Craniosacral Therapy involves gentle, hands-on care that encourages the revitalization of the inherent healing potential in the mind, body, and spirit. The resulting subtle energy, tissue, and structure shifts allow patients to experience reduced stress, anxiety, pain, and treatment-related symptoms.
  • Indications: Migraine headaches, chronic pain, feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, insomnia, stress, anxiety, surgery/procedure/treatment preparation and recovery, palliative care, sleep disturbances
  • Healing Touch is a gentle treatment that helps induce a relaxation response to enhance healing. The practitioner helps facilitate a deep sense of calm that allows for decreased pain and promotes a feeling of restoration.
  • Indications: Anxiety, depression, surgery recovery, weakened immune system, feeling unsettled or unbalanced, sleep disturbances, acute and chronic pain
  • Manual Lymph Drainage is a hands-on, light massage technique specifically designed to manage the condition of lymphedema. The mild pressure of the massage helps the body clear and reabsorb fluids that sometimes collect in the surface tissues of the skin, especially following surgery.
  • Indications: Heaviness/achiness in limb, radiation treatment with or without lymph node removal resulting in unresolved swelling, history of cancer treatment with radiation treatment, surgery, injury, large volume of lymph node removal
  • Aromatherapy employs natural oils obtained from aromatic plant material to help provide a healing environment. Oils can be diffused into the air, sprinkled on linens or sometimes rubbed into the skin to help support relaxation and sleep, improve feelings of well-being, and even reduce nausea in some patients.
  • Acupuncture is a holistic health modality that involves the use of fine needles (mechanical stimuli) to prompt the body’s natural healing response. Research shows that acupuncture helps to stimulate the muscles, collagen fibers, and signaling to the brain. In the hands of well-trained providers, it is a very safe and relaxing procedure that can help reduce anxiety and a variety of ailments.
  • Indications: Pain, nausea, vomiting, mental and emotional distress, hot flashes, dry mouth, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, peripheral neuropathy
  • HeartMath® Mentoring is a science-based technology program designed to coach participants in learning proven tools, such as heart coherence, to help manage and reduce stress. This technique helps balance a patient's thoughts and emotions to achieve mental clarity and physical well-being.
  • Indications: Stress management, depression, anger, grief, trouble coping, restless mind, feelings of hopelessness, chronic pain, heart conditions, disease management
  • Guided Imagery, Meditation, and Relaxation techniques can be used for pain relief, helping patients to tolerate medical procedures, modulating the effects of medication and stimulating the healing response. The use of these practices assists patients in taking a more active role in their healing process, offering ways to cope, accelerate recovery, and calm the mind by accessing the nervous system processes.
  • Indications: Stress, anxiety, chronic pain, surgery/procedures/treatment preparation, smoking cessation, sleep disturbances
  • Yoga Therapy is a restorative practice using body postures and the breath to harmonize and unite the mind, body, and spirit.
  • Indications: Sore/tight/weak joints and muscles, loss of balance, stress and anxiety, fatigue, feelings of loneliness, feelings of being scattered, range of motion, sleep disturbances
  • Tai Chi/Qigong is an exercise practiced as a sequence of graceful, flowing movements in harmony with nature that help to balance the mind, body, and spirit.
  • Indications: Sore/tight/weak joints and muscles, loss of balance, stress, anxiety, fatigue, feeling disconnected, feelings of loneliness
  • Art Therapy has become an integral component of holistic care for patients and families. The process of art is not only a creative activity but also a safe, therapeutic process that is both healing and life-enhancing. Patients and guests gain coping skills, can be distracted from the pain and the stages of their illness, engage more socially, and experience reduction in stress.
  • Indications: Stress, anxiety, emotional or psychological side effects of diagnosis and subsequent treatment
  • Sound Therapy employs the use of tuning forks and singing bowls on and around the body to create relaxation, grounding, calm, and balance.
  • Indications: Stress management, neuropathy, fatigue, transition support, feelings of hopelessness, discomfort with massage therapy
  • Labyrinth Facilitation helps a person to experience present moment awareness by virtue of their design and singular path. Labyrinths help to hold, as well as reveal, experiences of life’s journey. As a tool for mindfulness practice, walking a labyrinth or using a handheld labyrinth board can be representative of a path of pilgrimage and discovering the sacred in everyday life.
